Description
Violets are such a beautiful flower and the purple and yellow petals contrasting with the green stems made it a very appealing subject matter. The idea behind the crystal glass was to enhance the colour and mirror the delicacy of the flowers. While the plastered wall leads your eye to the violets and its colour complements the purple tones.
With a mauve background, this particular work was influenced by Édouard Manet’s exquisite ‘Glass with flowers’ painting which had a simple grey background. It goes without saying that small can be beautiful and still hold your attention. Just look at Jan Vermeer’s small paintings.
Michael’s other still life works on the website are Italian Wildflowers and Spanish Wildflowers.
