Description

The Royal Yacht passing under Erskine Bridge in an early morning misty light gave the work an atmospheric feel; with the dark tones of the ship and rustic values of the brake tug penetrating the mist. While the elevation of the bridge and low horizon line provided scale and height to the composition.

Calm waters always lead to good reflections, and the reflections of the vessels with a hint of blue sky provided a splash of colour to the work. In addition, the yellow funnel and flags offered a contrast to the darker tones of the painting. That particular combination of flags indicates that the queen was on board, i.e. the Royal Standard, Admiralty/Lord High Admiral and the Union Jack.

Note: Flying Spindrift had numerous owners throughout the years, including Clyde Shipping Co, Cory Tugs and Svitzer Marine.

Michael’s other Royal Yacht Britannia work depicts the ship passing Dumbarton Rock. While you may also be interested in QE2 – 40th Anniversary Cruise, Clyde Shipping Tugs, East India Harbour and Tugs and Snow Clouds.
