Description
The QE2, originally operated by Cunard, was built at John Brown and Co shipyard in Clydebank, just like the Royal Yacht Britannia. It was purchased by a Dubai investment company for $100 million in 2007, and set off on its farewell tour of Britain and Ireland in 2008.
During its penultimate voyage on the River Clyde in 2007, Michael did a number of sketches of the ship just off the Greenock esplanade, with Kilcreggan in the background. The idea was to paint the famous ocean liner with small craft sailing beside it to provide scale and show its majesty.
Fortunately, during one of the two dry days you get in Greenock every year, Michael was able to capture just the composition he was looking for; allowing the use of a lighter colour palette.
With its great turbines fired up and a suggestion of smoke coming from its funnel, the QE2 sailed the River Clyde for the penultimate time. One step closer to its final destination and retirement in Dubai.
