Description

This maritime work was painted during a heavy snow fall in the heart of winter. It depicts Cory tugs, including Chieftain, berthed at Victoria Harbour in Greenock, looking towards Greenock town. With the line of the quayside leading the eye into the painting.

The dark grey water provides contrast to the white snow laden harbour. While the red funnel of Chieftain adds a splash of colour to the winter scene. With the sun breaking through the snow clouds, the tugs in the background give balance to the composition, as the snow continues to fall.

The tugs are no longer in service and the work acts as a reminder of days gone by.

Other tugboat works you may be interested in are Clyde Shipping Tugs and East India Harbour. While Tall Ships – Victoria Harbour is set in the same location, and Custom House Quay – Greenock also showcases days gone by.
