Description

This evening scene of Cabaret de la Bohème in Montmartre, Paris is reminiscent of Van Gogh’s Night Café, which was the inspiration for the work. The panoramic perspective adds depth and enables the viewer to better experience the vibrancy of an evening in Paris.

The red external canopy helps lead the eye into the scene and lends a touch of drama to the interior lighting. The silhouette figures provide scale, while the cobblestone thoroughfare gives the painting a rural feel.

The lighting from the windows above imbues the building with a warm feel as it sits in shadow, while the accordionist adds a Parisian flavour. The work is rounded off with a sprinkling of stars in the top left-hand corner as an homage to Night Café.
